After a brief hiatus, multi-genre bass vendors Sub Merchants make their long awaited return to the bass music scene with a new series of strictly digital releases, the first of which comes via an eclectic offering from South London’s very own Panix. The 4-track EP ‘East Street’, showcases his unique and instantly recognisable take on that gritty, yet refined UK sound.

The lead track ‘Wooly Road’ sparks off Panix’s latest offering with rich glistening pads laid over a stripped back breakbeat and nostalgic vocal sampling which tumble forward harmoniously with the help of a classic 140 kick snare pattern, before a subtle rumbling bassline underpins the track, that is guaranteed to get those bass bins rattling. ‘Wooly Road’ is as refined as it is euphoric, and epitomises the eclectic influences that shape the Panix sound.

For his next trick, Panix pulls out a dark-side 2-step garage number ‘Long Time’. The track opens with syncopated crisp, shuffling drums and hats which give lends the track a lurching energy that powers towards the drop with the help of some spooky pulsing pads which build a sense of atmosphere.

Returning to more traditional dubstep roots, the closing track of the EP is a masterclass in space and reverb. ‘Sub City’ masterfully blends a moody atmosphere with progressive bongo drum rhythms which add a tribal hypnotic quality. Subtle vocal samples enhance the mood, whilst a thunderous bass drop, which continuously builds throughout into a progressive wobbler. Throughout, the eerie melodies maintain a sense of introspection. This one is an eyes-down tune for the heads.

For those purchasing the full EP from the Sub Merchants Bandcamp, they’ll be treated to an extra special bonus track ‘Superstar’. The jazzy, 140 garage flavours are reminiscent of those special golden hours as the days begin to shorten, providing the perfect soundtrack for the last days of summer.

‘East Street’ is a continued statement of intent from the enigmatic Sub Merchants imprint, with a consistent demonstration of eclecticism and a high calibre artist roster, showcasing quality over quantity of releases, with this the latest signing of Panix.
